The Hindu-Buddhist heritage in contemporary Malaysia is not that well acknowledged. Most people know it was there at some point back in time but it is not more than an embarrassing thought at the back of their head, and school books do enforce the view that Malaysia (or, better, Melayu people) comes into existence with the arrival of Islam, as if before that there was a spiritual desert.

This is not the case in Indonesia, where virtually anyone has no problem in admitting the Hindu past glory of Java, Sumatra or Lombok and Muslims do go visiting Hindu-Buddhist religious sites as well as keep alive some syncretistic practices (in Java known as kejawen).

The reason for this is that, unlike in Malaysia, Islam in Indonesia was never ethnicised and was never held as a pre-requisite for the very existence of a group, perhaps with the exception of Aceh. Therefore, you can find, for instance, Javanese or Moluccans who are Muslim, Christian or Buddhist, but still they would define themselves as “Javanese” or “Moluccan” in the first place without any problem.

However, in Malaysia — on the opposite — it is constitutionally impossible to be Malay and not being Muslim, because Islam is in the very definition of being “Malay”, according to the colonial law that the country inherited, which was clearly designed to divide and rule. Therefore it’s not in the interests of the state (whose class is mainly composed of Malay, former colonial officials, who are only interested in keeping their seats firm) and the Islamic religious powers, to let people understand their history, get deeper about it and understanding that reality may not be so neatly clear-cut, as they (ideally) wish it to be.

Pakistan, in this sense, is more similar to Malaysia: the existence of the country and, especially, of a kind of “Pakistani” identity is tightly linked with Islam. If there was no Islam the country and the identity it pre-assumes would just ideologically collapse — because its secession from India was largely due to religious tensions with the Hindus. So, again, it is in the political interest of the state to portray the society as “inherently Islamic”, to legitimize its power in opposition to India — as such, it definitely cannot afford letting its citizen discover their Hindu heritage.

P.S. My observations about Malaysia refer to contemporary Malaysia. It goes without saying, Islam arrived in Malaysia, just as in Indonesia, through a process of gradual syncretism, not through downright Arabisation. However, it is also true that this fact is nowadays largely obscured in the state ideology, while the majority of the most prominent Indonesian Muslim politicians had no qualms in admitting their syncretistic practices, up until current president Jokowi (Joko Widodo).
